Job Description
The Buttery is looking for an Assistant Manager to join our team!

We are a gourmet bakery in Santa Cruz, California offering the finest selection of wedding cakes, pies and tarts, pastries, and European style bread. In our Corner Cafe, we serve breakfast and lunch made from fresh, locally grown ingredients!

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assists in managing to ensure quality of service and product by all staff members.

  • Helps schedule all retail shifts and posts regularly.

  • Manages front and back of the house and identifies any training needs and improvement plans. This will include problem solving, conflict resolution and ongoing evaluation.

  • Is involved in researching supply sources and prices for items used in retail. Turns over regular ordering once the supply line is established.

  • Recruits and manages headcount of the front of the house staff.

  • Assist with hiring in other departments as needed

  • Manages repair and maintenance of front of the house equipment including tables, chairs, food cases and equipment and POS system.

  • Assist with repair and maintenance in other departments as needed.

  • Coordinates ordering of product from Kitchen Manager and Bakery Manger as needed.

  • 10.Provides new hire training and orientation to new all staff members.

  • 11.Oversees the handling of all aspects of daily receipts including deposits, credit card batching and reconciling.

  • 12. Responsible for customer outreach as regards customer complaints, web site accuracy, and monitoring of our Yelp, Twitter and Facebook accounts.

  • 13.Ensures safe conditions for all retail staff members and our retail customers.

  • 14.Handles worker’s comp claims and safety meetings and updates.

  • 15.Plans and oversees holiday sales and orders.

  • 16.Keeps track of hours to determine who is eligible for full time status and the benefits that apply including, but not limited to health insurance.

  • 17.Makes recommendations about opportunities to add to sales, to better serve our customers, to add new equipment.


  • High School Diploma or GED, College or University Degree preferred

  • 2-4 years supervisory experience in either a food service business is REQUIRED

  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal)

  • Outstanding motivational skills and positive attitude

  • Strong leadership and problems solving skills

  • Ability to empower team members

  • Capability with POS software; MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Power point)

  • Basic business math and accounting skills, and strong analytical/decision-making skills

  • Proven ability to attract/recruit, train, retain and promote high achievers

  • Good driving record

    Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of these units.

  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.

  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and solving problems.
